This is such a great post with a lot of good ways to consider how to come up with your own ideas. Thanks for sharing vs just saying 'don't use AI.'

This was so lovely, thank you for including me, Shannan! (Very welcome atm as I seem to be collecting rejections in my inbox. :))

I think it's easy to use AI as a crutch but we all have thoughts about various things all day long - using a note-taking app or a voice capture to absorb those thoughts helps against blank-page syndrome, when you sit down at the computer to write and can't think about anything at that point in time.

this entire post was actually drafted right in Substack so i have all the time stamps and history. And though I take issues with Pangram, you are welcome to use the Substack AI-scanner which shows this as 100% human. Remember, AI used our writing to train its models. Not the other way around.

This is where we are: suspicion. Like all the people who swear they can tell who's using AI and who isn't one supposed dead giveaway: the em-dash. Utter bullshit. Writers have been using that for centuries. The other day I picked up a novel by Henry Fielding and there were seven on one page.

I used AI when I got holy shit sick and docs told me I was nuts, it was menopause, not to come back, dunno….. I trained it to use peer-reviewed sources, I checked its sources (information largely right, citations hallucinated). And it was right. It was post-viral and it was neurological MCAS. While it shouldn’t ever be used to replace human creativity, and it needs to be regulated, and it’s got all kinds of dystopian potential, it saved me from who knows how many more convulsing episodes, anaphylaxis, acute mood changes, memory loss, etc. I wish the docs here in village-ville France woulda sorted it out, but they most definitely did not!
