Minor note. AI has not yet taken over the movie business. It will. It will also take over the writing business. You already see AI used in staff reports and to make fast outlines for business meetings. I think the company name is Otter. Like it ir not, AI has made creativity cheap. All us creative types better figure this out soon, or... It was a strange and wonderful story.
Truly an engrossing read, oozing with great imagery! As a performer, I relate to the idea that I am paid and praised to fall apart for my audience. I love the speculative element that “flesh actors” are now a novel experience in a world of AI entertainment. Honestly, it doesn’t seem far off from where the industry is headed. I love this idea as a standalone short story but now you’ve piqued my interest and I want to hear more stories from within this universe.
Loved this piece! Also really related to the writer describing how she writes partially as a way to process her own emotions/things that have happened in her life. I'm autistic, and writing as way of processing the world is something I've done pretty much every since I can remember.
God this was so good. Divya, you pulled me in and didn't let go the entire time I was reading this. What an astonishing piece of writing! Also, love the influences you list. Arrival is one of my favorite movies.
This was an incredible, unsettling read. I loved the art paired with it, it really captured the dark complexity of the relationship between the protagonist and “her man”. The interview with the author was also really compelling and you could see their influences in the work. The dark, gothic, abundance of the world and its excesses. This will stay with me for a while and keep me thinking.
