Lincoln, this is a beautiful story. And such a human one too, in how it made me think of change and the discomfort it comes with, and how satisfaction and familiarity often act as blinders. Great job!
Happy to support! You guys are doing a great job producing the flash fiction posts. It’s an education, balances out my meat & potatoes thriller writing, lol
I'm obsessed with this story!! It's such a brilliant way to show us that there's no joy or fulfillment in what isn't earned, that the excitement comes from striving.
Each morning, he awoke thinking that if he had any courage, he would starve himself to death and at least rid the world of one more useless monster. But he was afraid and hungry.
Love this. Our luxuries can make our world so small. Would love to read an anthology of perspectives I'd never think from classic tales...Started following this author's substack and really enjoy it, and Metallic Realms is on high up on my 2026 list.
Wonderful. We are left with the question of a middle way. Couldn’t the eagle fly forth at leisure, knowing his evening meal was already secure? But of course neither fiction nor life work like that… 🦅
Thanks so much for the reference to Cab Calloway's "St. James Infirmary." It's now one of my jazz greats, along with many others. I love and feel his dancing! The cartoonist captured the unique style (and a meaningful gesture) perfectly in the image of the ghost. The music evokes such important background and history. I've heard other versions but want to hear all of them now.
Brilliant story, Lincoln. A very original tale, short and not sweet but not bitter either. Loved it! Funnily, I found your story just under the general tag of fiction, but I have just published my own Prometheus myth re-working, however mine is about drug addiction and big pharma so it's quite different.
First introduction to the Prometheus/Eagle story for me and it was great! How fascinating. Thanks for writing this Lincoln, the interview was great too 🙂

Such a fun and surprising way to use the Prometheus story.

Zeus tussling the eagle’s feathers 😆
Was this what his life had been reduced to? Hadn’t he once had dreams? 🥺

Who are we and what do we become when we only choose do the easy thing? A great parable and fantastic story telling. Thank you.

Never thought I'd feel bad for the Promethean eagle. This was beautiful!
I felt this when first reading it too!!
