This is marvelous. Where I grew up was hit hard by Hurricane Helene, so that image of the girl on the tin roof really takes hold. And the radio man, a voice "spilling out of him like rabies". Wow. In the wake of No Kings, I feel the title takes on further meaning. Best wishes with your story cycle, I know it will be a fascinating read.
This piece was fun to read. One part fever dream, one part cautionary tale. Side note: It has been a loooong time (20 years?!) since I've watched Utena! With that recommendation, it's officially time for a rewatch.
I promise it holds up, Alexandra! And maybe it's a useful mirror for the times—there is a lot to glean, at least, from its observations about men and how masculinity is performed and entrenched. And the music! Always glad to encounter another Utena-enjoyer 🙏🏾💜
I was a teenager the last time I watched it, so I am actually looking forward to experiencing the story again. I have a lot more life and understanding of nuance to bring to it now! I imagine I'll notice more of the themes this time around. :D
Thank you so much for reading, everyone! Glad to hear that this strange little story resonates 📻😤

What a haunting piece, it reads like it was divinely dictated. The pairing with art by Varo is 👨🏾🍳💋👌
