Hello fellow strange pilgrims,
Happy Halloween!
It’s that time of the month again when we send out our theme for our free micro writing challenge!
Remember, the rules are simple: the piece must be 300 words or under, it must respond to the month’s theme (however loosely, however strangely), and it must be submitted within the 3-day window1. We’ll reply to everyone within 2-3 weeks (before we announce and publish the winner, of course). Winner gets $30 + publication.
November’s theme: BABY
Psst: You can read all the previous month’s winners here!
And a short but important: Do NOT send us AI-assisted or generated writing. Even if you think you’re using AI just for grammar, you must understand that unless you are extremely careful, it will change your language and style and you will be placated into accepting its edits as better. Karan and I, the editors of Strange Pilgrims and ONLY POEMS, created these entirely indie, ad-free, reader-supported spaces to champion brilliant and beautiful and yes, flawed and imperfect, work by human writers of all walks of life, all cultures, backgrounds, career levels, etc. It takes a lot of work to maintain these magazines and to keep them 100% free to read and free to submit to. You don’t need to respect or value or praise us, but if you are submitting to us, then you do need to be aware that we will not tolerate AI-writing. Just send your own stuff, even if it’s steaming shit. Stop trying to be great, just be good, folks.

Yours,
To accommodate folks in other timezones, we’ll stay open just another few hours past the official deadline, but please try to get things in before Nov 4, midnight Eastern!
